The project entailed a full interior and exterior renovation of a 1963 mid-century home, updating everything while preserving what made it worth renovating in the first place. That meant the koa. An endangered Hawaiian hardwood no longer available for purchase, the original koa was cleaned, restored, and kept wherever possible: the kitchen island surround, the master bedroom walls in bookmatched panels, and throughout the bathroom details.

The home was designed to live as much outside as in, with ocean breezes moving freely through every room. The kitchen was opened up. Custom Fleetwood sliding doors were engineered to slide past a structural post that couldn't be moved, the middle panel fixed, doors and screens flanking it on either side. The louvered aesthetic of the original jalousie windows was preserved, with new versions made by a local Hawaiian company, keeping the airflow the architecture was designed around.

The original tile work in the master bathroom was worth preserving, and was another special element retained alongside the koa to honor the home's mid-century character.

A house that earns its history by keeping what's irreplaceable and bringing everything else up to the standard it deserves.
