Lahaina Beach
COTTAGE
A dilapidated surf shack in old Lahaina, transformed into an extension of beach, surf, and sun.

This project was the complete renovation of a beachfront cottage in historic Lahaina. Working within the existing footprint was non-negotiable: in this historic area, taking the structure down would have meant losing the right to build this close to the beach. So Boyd kept the bones and started over on everything else.

Three bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, a kitchen, and dining space were accounted for to the inch inside this 1,400 square foot home. The kitchen island is wrapped in shiplap, applied on site. Flooring throughout is tile designed to look like wood, the right aesthetic, but built for a life of surf and sand.

The original exposed rafter ceiling was discovered hidden beneath drop popcorn ceilings in the master bedroom, then engineered and fabricated for the rest of the house to match the overall aesthetic of long-ago Hawaii.
An oasis in old Lahaina, a cottage that knows where it is, honors where it came from, and is ready for every sun-filled day ahead with hard-wearing materials, finishes and construction to withstand the elements.
