A broad lawn, a standing-seam metal roof, and the unhurried rhythms of old Hawaii.

The clients wanted a contemporary take on traditional Hawaiian plantation style. A metal roof, wide covered lanai, and materials built for a family of five who'd spend summers playing soccer on the lawn and piling in and out of the pool. With three kids in constant motion, every material had to earn its place: durable enough to take a beating, resistant to water and sun, easy to wipe down, and simple to maintain year after year.

The livability of the house shaped every decision. The kitchen opens fully with an accordion window over the countertop — pass food out, let the breeze in, keep the floor dry. A large window by the pool slides completely to one side, leaving a 20-foot opening between the house and the water. Each kid gets a dedicated locker at the entry.

The pool surround was set in small-format stone with extra grout depth for slip resistance. Where the lanai tile meets the pool deck, the hidden drain disappears, creating water management without the hardware.
